Don’t you love the spirit in the air by the start of December, it’s holidays time. Is the time to begin making all the lists for the christmas presents and all the arrangements, but what I love the most is personalised christmas stocking kits. A long time ago, you had to do them all by yourself, but nowadays there are wonderful christmas stocking kits available and you can make them in some hours work.
And now this tale on how it all began
While there are no saved records of the source of the Christmas stockings, there are popular legends that try to narrate the history of this Christmas custom.
Once upon a time there was a poor old father of three beautiful girls, but he was so poor he could not get money to wed them.
Saint Nicholas was travelling and has stopped for the night on the village. He heard some of the villagers talking about this poor gentleman and his three girls.
St. Nicholas wanted to help them, but he knew that the old man won’t receive charity. He decided to assist in secret. He waited until it was nighttime and crept into their home through the chimney.
He had three handbags of gold coins with him, one for each girl. As he was looking for a place to save those three bags, he observed stockings of the three daughters that were hung up the mantelpiece for drying out..
He put one bag in each stocking and off he went. When the daughters and their father woke up the next morning, they observed the bags of gold coins and were naturally, overjoyed. The girls were able to get married and live merrily ever after.
This is why Santa is recalled as a present giver. And this gave birth to the customs of kids placing stockings to be loaded with gifts for christmas.
The custom began in many European countries. Originally, kids merely used one of their everyday socks, but finally special Christmas stockings were created for this function. Nowadays, stores carry a fantastic variety of styles and sizes of Christmas stockings, and Christmas stockings are as well a frequent homemade craft.
You can make your own stockings or purchase christmas stocking kits.
